The surprise about turn with dates in this scheme has left many property experts surprised as the government had initially announced that the Help to Buy scheme would not be launched until January 2014. However, the Treasury has now stated that new mortgage guarantees can be applied for next week. Buyers will be able to apply to high street banks for mortgages of between 80% and 95% of the value of a property. The government mortgage is interest free for a period of 5 years.
Although this is the 2nd round or phase 2 of the Conservative’s property scheme, the first scheme involved new-build homes only – this phase means that both first time and next time buyers are able to secure mortgage guarantees on any property. This means that there will not be any need to save a gargantuan deposit in order to get their foot on the property ladder.
With three high street banks already signed up, RBS has decided to extend their opening hours over lunchtime to allow for extra customer demand. NatWest and Halifax are also signed up and prepared to help both new and existing clients.
