A Handy Guide to Declutter Like a Pro From Our Partners At Crown Relocation

Boxing up: declutter like a pro

So you’ve finally found your dream home. Great you think, then that moment of dread hits and you wonder how you’re going to get everything into your new home.

But what if you don’t actually need to take everything with you? Taking the time to go through what you have and declutter could save you a lot of time and effort come moving day.

We’ve listed some of our top tips to get you thinking about how to best declutter before moving into your new dream home.

    1. Realism over sentimentality

Look at those items gathering dust in boxes in the cupboard. Think about the last time they were used, not used in the last year, why not? If this is going to be the case going forward into your new home then it may be time to let go.

Not being overly sentimental is easier said than done but moving costs and space considerations in your new home are also important factors. If it’s truly too difficult to part with a large item, consider gifting it to a friend or family member. You’ll be safe in the knowledge that it’s going to a good home.

    2. Items to be sold

You can also use decluttering as a way to make extra money during the move. With the range of options now available, it’s easier than ever. For selling online, websites such as Ziffit will value your items instantly. Other options include Gumtree, eBay, Amazon or local selling groups on Facebook.

Don’t want to sell online? Why not try your local car boot sale or set up a Facebook event.

    3. Items for charity

For larger items that you would like to donate to a charity it is worth calling ahead. As they will need to consider the space they have available to display your donations. They may also be able to arrange for a collection, especially if you have a lot of items or heavier things to donate.

    4. Items to be thrown away or recycled

Take those items which aren’t wanted for sale or donation to the local reuse and recycling centre. You can also have items collected by your local council. Although, it is worth checking if there will be a fee for the collection. An alternative to this is using the website Freecycle, items are given away for free on the condition that those who buy come and collect.

Decluttering before you relocate may be a long process but following these steps should help make it easier. Leaving you in a position to concentrate on what really matters – the next adventure!
