Current interior trends, and how they can be used to sell your house

Interior trends may not change with the seasons like fashion, but when an interior trend takes off, it really is everywhere. The shabby chic style is one of the most celebrated over the last few years, with thousands of houses embracing the trend. Since then however a new wave of interior fashions have come to prominence, all promising to inject character into a home. But when it comes to selling your home, can these trends be used to make your house stand out?

Jungle themes

The jungle print theme has been the stand-out trends this year, with cushions, curtains, bedding and even vases boasting large, bold prints that really make a statement. Henry Holland’s collaboration with Habitat took the statement theme one step further by creating patterns that really took your breath away thanks to psychedelic and clashing colours. If your house is on the market but just can’t get enough of the trend, it’s worth investing in a few key pieces to make your rooms ‘pop’. It’s important not to go over the top however as too many patterns and clashing colours can put buyers off by making a room feel smaller. Dot a few leaf-print cushions on an otherwise plain sofa to bring it to life, add a botanical fruit bowl in the centre of the kitchen table to inject a modern touch or pop a parrot print over the bed to accentuate other room colours.

Folk inspired

Don’t save the bohemian look just for your clothes; our homes can be set off beautifully with this global trend. Think floral rugs and cushions, objects collected from around the world, and tribal prints dotted around for added depth. And don’t forget the obligatory cacti for the coffee table and stag’s head for a bold statement wall. If you’re going down this path and thinking of selling, make sure not to go all out. A simple injection of pattern is enough to hint at the folk tend, without going all out hippy.

Monochrome mayhem

This one is a bit of a cheat. Just like clothes monochrome is always trendy, but that is one of the reasons we thought we’d mention it. Inoffensive and classy, monochrome is simple, but can be difficult to inject into a room. If you’re a fan of the trend, white walls, painted floorboards and black and white accessories or furniture will transform a room, and leave it looking clean and modern. Although easy to change should it be required, monochrome can look harsh and put buyers off so make sure you add a splash of colour to soften the harsh monochrome. Pastel colours contrast beautifully, so perhaps paint the walls a soft shade of pink, add a soft print bed set and pop a bunch of glorious flowers into the room to lift it, while also leaving a beautiful smell for prospective buyers.

There are of course many more interior trends out there, but these are three of our favourites. Although not the be all and end all, following these fashions can help to showcase your house in its best light and aid a sale by tugging on the heartstrings of buyers and letting them really imagine living there. I Am The Agent offers professional photos as part of the sales package, which just like following trends, can really help to show off your house and its features.

What is your current favourite trend? Have you redecorated with a trend in mind to sell your house?
